Regional innovation strategies
In general, the context of healthcare transformed at the same time, however, local innovation policies differ between countries and regions. For example, there are differences in the amount and quality of the current regional innovation networks. There are also marked differences in the national and regional policies for innovation in healthcare—policies that are set up to support innovation by stimulating public–private partnerships, to focus on clear communication or to provide the specific conditions required to ensure local successes. And we see differences in regional challenges and issues, including in regional specialisation strategies.
We propose that innovation in regional healthcare systems requires in-depth knowledge of the specific situation of each regional ecosystem—the available networks, the key barriers and success factors, as well as the essential building blocks that stimulate innovation. If the regions establish successful innovation ecosystems, the stakeholders will be able to realise innovations that help the entire region confront the challenges of an ageing and ever more demanding population.
